Framed by volcanoes, towns near Quito specialize in weaving and shoppers can relax at family-run inns.<\/p>\n

The Otavalo region, cradled between two volcanoes; Imbabura (15,026 feet) and Cotacachi (16,292 feet), offers more than embroidery, adrenaline-inducing car rides and spectacular mountain views.
Poor soil and the dry climate shaped life for the Otavale\u00f1os and other Indians who were conquered by the Inca a few decades before the Spanish arrive to change everything forever. Pinsaqui is a Kichwa word that means \u201cHouse next to the river\u201d.
\nThough the river that flows near Hacienda Pinsaqui has diminished over time,the stature of the house has grown to replace the void, wichs fills the great ravine encircling the hacienda.<\/p>\n

But to call it a house is to do it a great disservice.
